Russian citizen Sergey Filimonov was extradited from Georgia to the United States in connection with a large-scale fraud scheme involving fake websites of financial institutions. According to the U.S. investigation, the 36-year-old web developer may have been involved in cybercrime between 2023 and 2025.
The U.S. Department of Justice announced Filimonov’s extradition. On Friday, he appeared before a court in the Northern District of Georgia.
According to the U.S. prosecution, the fraudulent scheme involved creating fake domains that mimicked the websites of legitimate U.S. financial institutions. Using these sites, the perpetrators allegedly stole users’ login credentials, including usernames, and then used them to gain access to bank accounts and withdraw funds.
The total losses resulting from the scheme are estimated at millions of dollars.
Filimonov has been charged with involvement in an international fraud scheme. If found guilty on the charges, he could face up to 175 years in prison.
The case is currently pending in a U.S. court, and the charges against Filimonov have yet to be proven in court.
