JOHANNESBURG – South Africa’s extradition of six Nigerian nationals to the US shows its cybercrime laws in action.
The Hawks and Interpol apprehended the group for alleged involvement in an online love scam where dozens of US women were defrauded of more than R100 million.
One expert warns that while the laws exist, a lack of human resources to address the issue remains a concern.
Jason Jordaan, a cybercrime investigator, said South Africa has exceptional legislation.
“In fact, I’d like to almost postulate that our legislation is probably superior to some of the legislation I see in countries like Europe and the United States as far as cybercrime goes. But I think the big difference is, like I said, it comes down to capacity. We struggle with capacity in this particular regard.
“Oftentimes, when we do build up capacity within the government sector, it gets poached to the private sector where salaries are significantly higher sometimes in this regard. And I think that costs us in the long run. But I don’t think as a country we need to step back from a legislative point of view in terms of our ability to deal with this.”
