California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law Thursday a host of measures aiming to curb online addiction among children, including a landmark bill to ban social media platforms from providing addictive features to minors under 16.

The package of bills is the state’s latest attempt to rein in safety risks that lawmakers said have contributed to a rise in depression and anxiety in young people. Altogether, the measures establish some of the most significant online protections for children in the US, supporters said.
