There have been rumours recently of imminent legislation introducing a social-media ban for children in the European Union. It seems the bill will now debut on Thursday (17 September).
It’s being well leaked in advance, though. Politico has plenty of details of what the EU Kids Act is likely to contain.
The headline is that it will “create a tiered system for accessing social media under parental supervision before age 15” – so not an outright ban on everything, as such. However, the act is going to be covering more than just social media.
“The EU’s new proposal would apply to social media, video-sharing platforms, online games, and AI chatbots and AI companions, but would exclude educational tools,” noted Politico.
The usual caveats apply here. A draft text is still being worked on, and even when it’s announced on Thursday, will then have togo through the process of being negotiated and amended by EU member countries and the European Parliament.
