Cybersecurity incident affects Sutton town, school networks

SUTTON, Mass. —
Another Massachusetts community is investigating a cybersecurity incident that affected portions of their network and school environment, according to Sutton officials.
Officials said the town’s information technology team identified the incident and immediately took steps to secure its systems, contain the issue and minimize any potential impact on operations. Independent cybersecurity and forensic experts have been hired, and law enforcement has been notified, Sutton officials said.
Officials are still trying to determine the nature and scope of the incident, including whether any information was affected.
Town officials said municipal services continue to operate and that additional security measures have been implemented to strengthen the town’s systems.
The town said it will provide updates as more information becomes available.
Last week, the Springfield, Massachusetts, school district’s data was breached as a result of a cyberattack that closed schools for several days last week. The FBI is now involved in that investigation.
Everett City Hall was closed for several days after a cybersecurity incident last week. During the closure, the police and fire departments, the Department of Public Works, public schools and public libraries continued to operate as normal.
