I’m ascending through glinting puffs of cloud at the pointy end of a Singapore Airlines 787. There’s nowhere I’d rather be than lounging here in airline pyjamas, being waited on like a modern-day maharaja. A bottomless glass of deliciousness in my hand, the smell of satay in the galley, a book by my side, a playlist of movies on a nice big screen. It’s fantastic, flying like this. No wonder Australian politicians are hooked.
The federal transport minister revealed this week that she has received Qantas Platinum status for life. Such uncommon luck is surprisingly common in Canberra. Senior politicians from both sides enjoy plum perks from an airline whose market dominance depends on government favouritism.
