TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – AARP Kansas held a class on how seniors can spot scams during the Aging Untold Expo at West Ridge Mall.
AARP Kansas Director Glenda Duboise said the class covered scams delivered by phone, text, and email, and gave seniors practical ways to protect themselves.
“We have our senior advisor from the fraud watch with AARP, and he’s here sharing great practical tips and helping people identify ways that they might have been scammed,” Duboise said. “He is giving some ways to avoid the scams, and the seniors are thankful for this information and opportunity to get these resources.”
The scam prevention was only one part of the expo. Dozens of vendors offered everything from financial help to health support. Attendees were also able to receive free blood pressure checks.
Duboise said the broadening of senior resources matters more than ever, due to the longevity of people’s lives
“Because we’re living longer, we need to be able to have all the resources that are going to help us to do that and flourish,” Duboise said. “So all of those kinds of resources are here today to connect them and to actually show them how to live more healthy.”
Former Topeka Mayor Mike Padilla attended the expo and said this event is great for the city’s community.
“I think it’s a great idea; it shows another aspect of how people take care of themselves in Topeka, Kansas. Topeka’s always trying to do what they can to improve life for everyone,” Padilla said.
AARP recommends pausing before acting, not sharing information with unknown contacts, and practicing a refusal script ahead of time.
