(CNN) – An investigation is underway after a prolific cybercriminal group claimed it stole the personal data of thousands of FBI agents.
The FBI said in a statement to CNN that a job application portal on the bureau’s website was down Tuesday as it dealt with the incident.
The statement came hours after the hacking group Shiny Hunters claimed the FBI as a victim on its dark website. The group said it was “offended” by a recent public advisory from the FBI that analyzed the hackers’ alleged tactics for extorting victim organizations.
The hackers claimed to have accessed the FBI starting Monday night.
Shiny Hunters targets “major companies across tech, finance, and retail, often stealing millions of customer records at once,” according to that FBI advisory. The group has also hacked multiple large-scale healthcare organizations.
The hackers’ endgame with the FBI was unclear Tuesday. They demanded the bureau remove or revise its advisory but claimed they weren’t “financially motivated” in this case.
