Ballan Road will receive a $1.5m safety upgrade following years of concern about children getting to and from Anakie Primary School.
Lara MP Ella George announced the funding on Monday, with parking and pedestrian access around the school to be reviewed before a detailed plan for the works is developed.
The commitment follows a sustained push from the school community, which George had joined in advocating for the upgrades.
School council president Kristy Vasils said families had long wanted their concerns addressed.
“We’ve spent the past year campaigning alongside Ella to secure these much-needed funds, and we couldn’t be happier with the result,” Vasils said.
“The safety of our families outside our school is a top priority for us, and we’re incredibly grateful to now hopefully have the funding to reflect that priority.”
An independent road safety auditor has been engaged as part of the Department of Transport and Planning’s assessment of the school precinct.
The findings will guide the improvements, with specific works yet to be determined.
George said the funding would help make school journeys safer.
“Every child deserves to get to and from school safely. This investment means Anakie families can have peace of mind that Ballan Road will be safer for everyone, whether they are walking, riding or driving,” she said.
“This upgrade isn’t just about roads, it’s about looking after our community. That’s why I am proud that the Victorian Labor government listened, and now Anakie will have the safer road it deserves.”
