Hyundai Capital Hack Exposes Data of 146 Loan Agents in South Korea; No Customer Impact Reported — BigGo Finance | #hacking | #cybersecurity | #infosec | #comptia | #pentest | #hacker

Hyundai Capital has confirmed that a hacking attack originating from an overseas internet protocol (IP) address exposed the personal information of 146 mortgage loan agents. No evidence of customer data leakage or internal system compromise has been found.

Hyundai Capital announced on the 3rd that during a security review, it discovered that a webpage used for looking up mortgage loan agents had been attacked, resulting in the exposure of partial personal information belonging to 146 agents. The attack was carried out using an overseas IP address, and the company immediately blocked the IP and the affected page upon confirming the incident.

The compromised information reportedly includes names, mobile phone numbers, email addresses, Credit Finance Association of Korea registration numbers, internal agent identification numbers, and resident registration numbers.

A Hyundai Capital official explained that the attack has been confirmed not to be one of the AI-powered cyberattack methods that have been reported with increasing frequency recently. However, some media outlets have reported that AI was likely used, leading to conflicting interpretations of the attack method.

The company drew a clear line, stating that no evidence has been found to date indicating that customer personal information was leaked or that internal systems were accessed or attacked. The targeted page is a webpage where customers can view publicly available information about mortgage loan agents.

Hyundai Capital formed an incident response task force immediately after becoming aware of the data breach and is investigating whether any additional damage has occurred.

This incident follows recent hacking and data breach incidents at South Korea’s five major banks and savings banks, once again exposing cybersecurity vulnerabilities across the country’s financial sector. With overseas IP-based attacks on financial companies continuing, calls for strengthened security inspections by South Korean financial authorities are expected to grow.

Hyundai Capital is reportedly working to determine the scope of the leaked agent information and any additional damage, while preparing individual notifications and protective measures for those affected.
