VICKSBURG, Miss. (WJTV) – Vicksburg Mayor Willis Thompson announced the city is investigating a cybersecurity incident, which resulted from a ransomware attack.

The incident resulted in the temporary shutdown of the city’s computer systems on October 1, 2026.

According to Willis, services such as 911, the Police and Fire Departments and utility services were not affected and remain operational. He said there could be delays for anyone attempting to make in-person payments for utility services.

“Please be assured that there will be no penalties or termination of services while this system is offline,” the mayor stated.

He said the city implemented its incident response protocols and is working with external cybersecurity specialists and other appropriate partners to conduct a thorough investigation. The city is also working to restore its systems in a secure manner and will continue to provide updates.

“One of the top priorities of our investigation is determining whether there was any compromise of personal or confidential information relating to current and/or former customers, contractors, vendors, employees, or affiliated business partners of the city,” said Thompson. “At this time, the investigation is ongoing, and the city has not reached a final determination regarding what information, if any, may have been accessed or acquired without authorization.”
