HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month and Constable Mark Herman’s Office is reminding residents to stay alert for phishing scams and to think carefully before clicking on unexpected emails, text messages, links or attachments.

Phishing scams are designed to appear legitimate while tricking people into providing sensitive personal information, revealing account credentials or downloading malicious software.

A single careless click can potentially put personal information, online accounts and electronic devices at risk.

Always be careful before clicking:

  • Verify that a message comes from a trusted sender.

  • Be wary of any unexpected communications that create a sense of urgency. P

  • Avoid entering passwords or other personal information through unsolicited links.

  • Carefully examine links and attachments before opening them.

  • When in doubt contact the person, business or organization directly using contact information known to be legitimate.

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant throughout the month and make cybersecurity a habit by pausing, verifying and thinking before clicking.
