Councillor Gemma Furnivall has been campaigning for fencing and barriers to be installed around the new West Street play area in Fareham town centre, raising concerns about safety ahead of its opening.
Cllr Furnivall has now said that Fareham Borough Council have reassured her about how seriously they are taking concerns.

She said: “I wanted to give you an update on the campaign for the West Street play area barriers and fencing.
“I’ve actually had some really productive conversations today with senior officers at the council.
“They’ve been reassuring me about how seriously they’re taking this issue, about how the impact of receiving that kind of public response is being received for them.
“They’ve committed to some more conversations with me in the coming days and a visit to the play area to have a look at things.”

The campaign gained momentum after more than 1,000 people signed a petition calling for proper fencing to keep children safe.
Ms Furnivall said she was encouraged by the council’s willingness to engage and review the safety aspects before opening the play area.
She said: “I’m thankful to the council for taking these concerns seriously and acting before opening the playground.
“This is good progress, but I’ll continue making the case for a safe, properly enclosed play area.”
In response to the campaign, an independent risk assessment has been carried out, and further discussions are ongoing.
There isn’t a confirmed date for the opening at the moment.
Cllr Furnivall added: “There’s a provisional one, but actually with how things are being looked into at the moment, I’m actually just really reassured and encouraged that it’s being taken seriously.”
The campaign began after Cllr Furnivall raised concerns about the lack of fencing, noting that the previous playground was enclosed.
She said that more than 800 people signed the petition within 24 hours, and more than 400 parents told her they would not use the park at all.
Councillor Frair Burgess, executive member for leisure and community, acknowledged the concerns.
She said: “We understand the concerns some parents and carers have raised about the new play area and we take them seriously.”
