MARIETTA, Ohio (WTAP) – A student in the cybersecurity program at Washington State College of Ohio is wrapping up her first year after overcoming obstacles.

Andrea Brennan, originally from Venezuela, moved to the United States in 2020, during the COVID pandemic.

Brennan said she could not speak a full sentence in English when she arrived.

Brennan surrounded herself with people who supported her and started learning English at the gym.

She is on track to earn her associate degree in cybersecurity. She hopes to use those skills to help protect others in the future.

“Cyber security is not only technology,” Brennan said. “You’re not going to be on a desk for 8 hours facing a computer. It can be actually way deeper than that. So you can actually save people’s life. You can actually help companies. You can actually help with AI nowadays to help companies and get better medical advices. So it goes way deeper than just a computer and just a software or a network.”

Tune in Friday, October 9 to see Brennan featured for This is Home.
