Microsoft: Ransomware attacks increasing in Japan | #ransomware | #cybercrime

A survey by Microsoft has found that the number of cyberattacks using ransomware has significantly surged in Japan.

The IT giant released the results of the survey of its customers around the world this month.

The report says that a daily average of about 165 trillion security signals were detected globally from July 2025 to June 2026.

It also found that 5.2 billion emails per day were recognized as spam.

Microsoft says that ransomware attacks totaled 8,521 worldwide, down about 3 percent from the previous year. A total of 95 such incidents were reported in Japan, an increase of 67 percent.

Microsoft analyzed the number of companies and organizations that came under cyberattack from January to June by country.

Japan had the eighth-highest share of firms and bodies affected by cyber threats, at 2.5 percent of the total.

The report points out that attacks have been accelerating with AI. In many cases, vulnerabilities are exploited within 24 hours of being discovered.

Kawano Shoji, Microsoft Japan’s Chief Security Officer, says Japan is likely to be chosen as a target due to its accumulated technology for global supply chains. He also says it is important to protect systems by detecting abnormalities, rather than creating more complex ones.
