Peach Aviation announced that a cloud service operated by IDC Frontier, which it uses for services including the delivery of reservation-related emails, was hit by a ransomware attack by a third party, causing an outage that halted email delivery and other services.
The attack occurred at around 3:40 a.m. on October 7. It affected IDC Frontier’s “IDCF Cloud” (East Japan Region 1), causing the email transmission system, including itinerary delivery servers, to stop functioning or experience processing delays. As a result, the delivery of “itinerary emails” and other messages sent upon completion of new reservations was delayed or failed.
The affected email delivery system contains approximately 1.89 million records, including email addresses, names in alphabetical notation, telephone numbers, reservation numbers, and itinerary details. No leak of personal information has been confirmed at this time. Information related to payment and authentication, such as credit card and passport details, is not stored on the affected servers and is therefore not impacted, the company said.
Peach received a report from IDC Frontier that measures to isolate and block network communications and access routes to the affected servers had been completed, and confirmed that there was no impact on its other systems. Delayed itinerary emails and other messages have been sent sequentially using alternative servers since October 8. The company has also reported the incident to the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
