Sanwo-Olu urges Lagosians to be vigilant against cybercrime | #cybercrime | #infosec

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged residents to remain vigilant against cybercrime and adopt safe digital practices to protect themselves from online fraudsters.

He said cybersecurity was a shared responsibility, urging citizens to understand common cyber risks and take proactive steps to safeguard their personal information and digital assets.

Sanwo-Olu spoke in a statement from the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, as Lagos joined the global community in marking Cybersecurity Awareness Month in October.

The governor said many cybercrime victims were unaware of basic digital safety practices, stressing the need for public education to improve online safety.

He said the state had continued to promote innovation-driven cybersecurity initiatives through the Cybersecurity Advisory Board and the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology (MIST).

According to him, Lagos launched the Lagos State Cybersecurity Guidelines earlier this year to provide practical security measures for small, medium and large businesses operating in the state.

The guidelines are designed to help organisations protect their digital assets and strengthen their cybersecurity systems.

The governor added that the state has invested in cybersecurity training, public awareness, and professional development across public institutions, while pursuing milestones such as ISO 27001 certification to strengthen digital trust and protect critical digital infrastructure.

He said the state would intensify awareness campaigns throughout October through social and traditional media in English, Yoruba and Pidgin English.

The campaigns, coordinated by MIST and the Cybersecurity Advisory Board led by Prof. Fene Osakwe, will teach residents how to spot phishing scams, create strong passwords, enable multifactor authentication, and update their devices regularly.

Sanwo-Olu said the initiatives align with global best practices and reflect the state’s commitment to building a digitally secure, resilient economy.

He urged residents to stay informed, alert, and security-conscious as they use digital platforms.
