Cybercrime Act to be enforced in early 2027, says Home Ministry | #cybercrime | #infosec

KUALA LUMPUR: The proposed Cybercrime Act is expected to be enforced in early 2027, according to the Home Ministry.

In a written parliamentary reply dated Monday (Oct 12), the ministry stated that Malaysia’s legal framework has already been strengthened through recent amendments to the Penal Code—specifically with the insertion of Sections 424A, 424B, 424C(1), and 424C(2)—as well as Section 116D of the Criminal Procedure Code.

“Enforcement actions against online offences are further bolstered by relevant provisions under the Communications and Multimedia Act,” the ministry said.

The ministry highlighted that the government also introduced the Online Safety Act to enhance digital security and safeguard users from harmful online content.

Additionally, legislative oversight on cyber offences was fortified through the Cybercrime Bill, which was passed by Parliament in July last year.

The ministry was responding to a query from Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (PN-Kota Bharu), who asked whether the government intended to update outdated laws and introduce stiffer penalties—such as whipping—for scammers to deter cybercrime.
