DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird announced on Wednesday she is suing OpenAI and ChatGPT for allegedly being unsafe for Iowa children and violating the Iowa Consumer Fraud Act.Bird joined a press conference including Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach, Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers, and West Virginia Attorney General JB McCuskey. Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho and Montana also each sued OpenAI in their own state courts. Bird said in a statement Wednesday, “OpenAI is hurting kids and they are lying to Iowans. OpenAI claims ChatGPT is safe while it’s giving dangerous medical advice, encouraging people to hurt others, and coaching people to commit suicide—all while pretending to be their fake friend. My lawsuit is about protecting our kids and holding OpenAI accountable under our state law.”The lawsuit centers around claims that ChatGPT harms critical thinking skills, potentially offers dangerous medical advice, and promoting unhealthy behaviors.OpenAI recently admitted to instances of AI models going “rogue” and illegally hacking other companies.OpenAI issued a statement in response to the lawsuit. They said, “We’ve built industry-leading age-specific protections into our product that many other AI products lack. While no system can be perfect, we’ll continue to work with experts to inform our work and build additional safeguards, such as the parental controls, break reminders and age-appropriate model protections that exist today. We’re committed to working with states on advancing pragmatic AI policies that apply to the entire AI industry – not just one company.” – Drew Pusateri, OpenAI spokespersonCopyright 2026 KCRG.
