SMMEs have become easier targets for criminals, as they often lack the capacity or budget for IT, auditors, or other staff needed to protect them from cybercrime.
This is according to the founder of ISG Corporate Business Solutions, Isago Neville Mosikatsi.
He said criminals target SMMEs to steal their customer information, request fraudulent payments and profit from attacking these businesses online.
According to Mosikatsi, social media is an easier market to intercept information, steal customer profiles, as well as to imitate business profiles and to intercept emails between clients and the service provider, being the SMME.
“It’s much easier for criminals to even pose as the business, to either rip off or steal from clients, and also run fake ads and run certain links that can prove to be harmful to customers,” he said.
He said that SMMEs make the mistake of believing they are not targets of these crimes, mentioning once again that due to the small nature of their business, they believe that they are hidden from criminals and are too trusting towards their employees.
“The biggest mistakes would be allowing employees to bring their own devices to work; it’s very easy to access those details,” he added.
He said that businesses should look out for pop-up messages, people posing as clients, and should avoid clicking on every pop-up link sent to them, even from someone they trust, as these criminals are very quick to steal and pose as a professional establishment.
He said that some even go as far as imitating proof of payment, generating new accounts and attracting their targets by creating panic-inducing messages that could look legit.
“We have cybercriminals that spend the whole day trying to crack a single Facebook account,” he said.
