Saskatchewan RCMP are warning residents about an RCMP email scam that falsely claims to come from the police force.
The email says the recipient is the subject of a cybercrime investigation. It threatens arrest unless the person contacts investigators at carcmpgrca@gmail.com.
Saskatchewan Mounties said the email is a scam.
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre outlines this and other police-related scams on its website.
Police say anyone who gets a suspicious email should:
not email the sender back
not click any links
not send personal information
not send money or gift cards
People unsure whether an email from the RCMP is real should contact their local detachment. The same goes for anyone who believes they have been defrauded.
Suspected emails can be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. Call toll-free at 1-888-495-8501 or report online at antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
