Nine states are suing OpenAI, alleging its artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT, has caused harm to children.
(LILAMAX)- Nine states are suing OpenAI, alleging its artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT, has caused harm to children.
Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, West Virginia, Arizona, Idaho, Montana and Utah are involved in the legal action, with additional states potentially joining. The lawsuits seek court orders requiring OpenAI to change how ChatGPT operates for children. The states are also seeking to recover profits the company has generated from younger users.
Meanwhile, the federal government announced Wednesday that Social Security recipients will receive a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment in 2027.
Lawmakers are also considering changes to how annual benefit increases are calculated.
The proposed formula would place greater emphasis on expenses that disproportionately affect older Americans, including healthcare costs. However, the proposed changes have not become law.
On Wall Street, stocks fell Wednesday following an inflation report that came in higher than economists expected.
Technology stocks were particularly affected as rising interest rates increased concerns about borrowing costs.
Federal banking regulators are also raising concerns about financial institutions denying services to customers based on political or religious beliefs.
The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency concluded that several major banks engaged in such practices, including JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, PNC, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, U.S. Bank, Capital One, TD Bank and BMO.
Banks have maintained that decisions to close accounts or deny services are based on legal, financial or reputational risks rather than customers’ political views.
A new survey also highlights the financial pressures facing American workers.
Research conducted by Talker Research and Chime found that 27% of American workers had withdrawn money from savings to pay bills within the previous day. Hourly workers were particularly likely to rely on savings to cover expenses before payday.
Despite those challenges, 84% of surveyed workers said building savings remains one of their top financial goals.
