A major breach by an unknown hacking group resulted in hundreds of supermarkets across France shuttering their fridge and freezer aisles. The cyber attack allowed the group to raise temperatures in the freezers to 122 degrees Fahrenheit, spoiling an enormous amount of food and starting multiple fires. Grocery store freezers often run via control panels that can be accessed over the Internet, allowing maintenance companies to fix them remotely. But that convenience for repair also leaves room for hackers to wreak havoc and cause millions of dollars in damage. The root of the problem in this case was caused by outdated firmware, which allowed the bad actors to remotely trigger multiple stores’ forced defrosting systems. Not unlike hospitals and schools, grocery stores are a frequent target for cyber attacks across the pond and in the U.S., exposing how easy it can be to disrupt access to necessities.
