For the second time this week a Vallejo City Unified School District site safety official was arrested, this time at Jesse Bethel High School, where Charles Fontenette was booked for allegedly committing battery with serious bodily injury.
In a video circulating on social media, Fontenette can be seen with a minor in a headlock, forcing the minor to appear unconscious.
The school district wrote a letter to students’ families on Saturday morning informing them about the Friday incident.
“An individual who is not a VCUSD student entered the campus without authorization and became involved in a physical altercation with students,” the statement reads. “School personnel and site safety intervened, and law enforcement responded to the incident. No VCUSD students were injured.”
The district said it is aware of the video footage circulating showing a portion of the incident involving a site safety employee and the student. The district also said it is fully cooperating with law enforcement.
“We recognize that this incident and the video circulating online may raise concerns among our families,” the district statement continues. “The safety and well-being of our students remain our highest priorities. We take this matter seriously and are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the actions taken by staff and campus safety procedures.”
The district said that counselors and mental health support staff are available to assist students if needed.
This incident is not a rare one. It comes just three days after another site safety official, Vallejo High School’s Darryl Walker, was arrested for being in possession of suspected narcotics.
It also comes nearly a year after Vallejo High School site safety supervisor Rueben Carter Freeman was arrested and charged with multiple crimes involving a student, including soliciting sexual acts.
In December of last year, Freeman fled the Vallejo campus after learning police had been notified. Police quickly found Freeman running nearby and detained him without incident.
According to a news release, Vallejo police determined Freeman had forcefully taken a student’s phone and stated he would not return it unless she complied with his demands. The investigation further revealed that Freeman solicited sexual acts from the student, held her against her will, and prevented her from leaving the classroom while still in possession of her phone. Freeman eventually returned the phone and allowed her to leave only after she acquiesced to some of his demands.
