Containing attacks and calls to enhance digital readinessCyberspace is an open arena for confrontation.Tehran, Iran – Iran’s Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Technology has announced a notable increase in cyberattacks and hacking attempts targeting telecommunications networks and critical infrastructure across the country. He also emphasized the need for the utmost vigilance and caution to counter these growing threats.Behzad Akbari, who also serves as Chairman and CEO of the Telecommunication Infrastructure Company of Iran, stated in a post on the platform X (formerly Twitter) that the country’s digital infrastructure has been subjected to an intense and escalating wave of cyberattacks over the past 48 hours. He noted that these attacks primarily took the form of “Distributed Denial of Service” (DDoS) attacks.Containing attacks and calls to enhance digital readinessAkbari reassured the public regarding the current state of the network. He noted that domestic and international defense systems—including anti-malware measures—successfully managed to contain the vast majority of these intense attacks. Consequently, this helped maintain network stability and ensured that essential services remained available to users, preventing a total service outage. At the same time, the Iranian official issued an urgent call to all government and private institutions and organizations—including internet service providers, data centers, and digital service providers—to bolster the security readiness of their systems. He emphasized the need to implement the highest standards of digital protection, while intensifying monitoring and periodic cybersecurity oversight to prevent any serious breaches. However, he did not disclose which entities or countries might be responsible for these attacks.Cyberspace is an open arena for confrontation. In recent years, Iran has frequently been the target of sophisticated cyberattacks, including distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. Many digital security experts argue that the extensive use of government-imposed blocking strategies—coupled with the reliance of millions of users on virtual private networks (VPNs) to bypass these internet restrictions—has directly weakened the country’s infrastructure, rendering it more vulnerable to breaches. These developments underscore the fact that cyberspace has recently emerged as a primary arena for competition and confrontation, ranging from the targeting of sensitive systems and surveillance networks to the disruption of banking services and vital public utilities.
