MANILA, Philippines — Globe and the Makati City Government have strengthened their partnership to safeguard older residents against online scams, engaging more than 600 senior citizens with practical digital safety skills through a large-scale Senior Digizen learning session. The program is particularly relevant in Makati City, home to 59,414 registered senior citizens. As more essential services, financial transactions, and everyday communications move online, helping the senior residents recognize digital threats has become increasingly important. According to the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC), consumer fraud emerged as the top complaint among senior citizens in 2025. Authorities have warned that older Filipinos remain vulnerable to phishing, smishing, investment and “budol” scams, romance scams and fraudulent offers. During the session, Globe mobilized employee volunteers to provide participants with hands-on guidance on identifying suspicious messages, calls and links; protecting their personal and financial information; and avoiding common scams. The seniors also learned how to use their mobile phones and digital services for everyday needs, including staying connected with loved ones and accessing essential services. “For many of us, using a phone to pay a bill, access a service or connect with family has become part of everyday life. But not everyone has had the same opportunity to become comfortable with technology,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe chief sustainability and corporate communications officer. “Through our partnership with Makati, we are empowering seniors to protect their hard-earned savings and participate safely in the digital economy.” Scaling digital inclusion The initiative highlights the strength of public-private collaboration in advancing digital inclusion across vulnerable sectors. “Our senioritos and senioritas worked hard for everything they have, and they deserve to enjoy it in peace. We cannot let scammers take that away from them. We are grateful to Globe and its volunteers for sitting down with our seniors, teaching them patiently, and making sure no one in Makati gets left behind as the city goes digital,” said Makati City Mayor Nancy Binay. Senior Citizens Party-list Rep. Rodolfo “Ompong” Ordanes also attended the event to express support for senior digital literacy. Private sector partners, including HONOR, McDonald’s, AC Health, Healthway, and Generika, supported the event by providing meals, tokens, and raffle prizes. Launched in 2024, Senior Digizen is Globe’s digital inclusion program designed to help older Filipinos navigate the digital world safely and independently. The event also formed part of Globe’s broader GDay 2026 celebration and Globe of Good campaign, through which employees dedicate their time and expertise to support local communities nationwide and create a positive impact. This year’s GDay Love Overload extends Globe’s appreciation beyond a single day through customer rewards, nationwide community activities, and volunteer-led initiatives. Through Senior Digizen and sustained partnerships with local governments such as Makati, Globe is also ensuring that the spirit of GDay reaches vulnerable sectors—helping more Filipinos benefit from connectivity while remaining informed, protected and included in the digital world.
