TextNow has announced Yello!, a mobile phone designed to give kids their first taste of independence without handing them unrestricted access to the internet, social media, or an endless collection of apps.
The new device focuses on calling and texting, allowing children to communicate with a select group of people approved by their parents. It’s a simpler approach to the first-phone experience, aimed at families who want their kids to stay connected without introducing everything that comes with a traditional smartphone.
For parents navigating the question of when their child is ready for a phone, Yello! offers a middle ground between having no device and carrying a fully connected smartphone.
Parents Control Who Can Call and Text
The central feature of Yello! is its parent-managed contact system. Each phone comes with its own mobile number and connects to a dedicated parental portal, where adults can create and update an approved circle of contacts.
Kids can only call or text people within that circle, and incoming communication is restricted to those same approved contacts. Parents can make changes remotely, with updates syncing directly to the phone.
That setup covers everyday situations such as arranging pickup after sports practice, checking in after school, or calling grandparents. It gives children a direct line to trusted people without opening the door to unsolicited calls or messages.
Yello! leaves out several familiar smartphone features, including social media, an app store, and unrestricted web browsing. The idea is to keep communication front and center rather than introduce the distractions that can accompany a child’s first device.
Built Around What Parents Actually Want
TextNow says its approach reflects feedback from parents about their priorities when choosing a child’s first phone.
According to research commissioned by the company, 28% of parents identified limiting calls and texts to approved contacts as their single most important phone feature, ranking it above basic calling and texting functionality.
TextNow CEO and Co-Founder Derek Ting said the company developed Yello! to give children a phone they could feel excited about owning while helping parents feel comfortable with the decision.
The company plans to collect feedback from parents and children using the first generation of Yello!, with their experiences helping guide future development.
Pricing and Availability
Yello! is scheduled to become available for purchase on October 20, 2026, through TextNow’s website.
