LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — SafeVoice, the system that Nevada schools use to take anonymous reports about safety concerns, suffered a data breach that compromised some personal information. The Nevada Department of Education (NDE) says the multistate cybersecurity incident concerns technology vendor Navigate360.Navigate360 says SafeVoice remains fully operational and available 24/7 for students and families to report safety concerns.“SafeVoice gives Nevada students a way to speak up when they are concerned about their own safety or the well-being of someone else, connecting those concerns with adults who can step in and help before harm occurs,” said Dr. Victor Wakefield, Superintendent of Public Instruction. “That trust is essential, and the compromise of sensitive information is unacceptable. We have pressed Navigate360 for answers, and we are working with state education leaders across the country to demand greater accountability and stronger protections for students.”According to NDE, Navigate360 notified the state earlier this spring that SafeVoice might have been affected by a criminal multistate cybersecurity incident between November last year and this past March, and that an independent forensic investigation was underway. Although the incident drew Congressional inquiries, national media coverage and a U.S. Department of Justice criminal investigation, Nevada-specific information remained limited.FILE – A screenshot shows the options for the SafeVoice Nevada reporting system. This month, Navigate360 notified the state that a forensic investigation concluded about 10% of SafeVoice Nevada tips with personally identifiable information was compromised. Because the system is designed to allow individuals to report concerns without identifying themselves, NDE says it cannot reliably identify and directly notify all affected individuals.NDE and DPS are working with school districts and local law enforcement to share information and provide guidance to support students and families. They will also post information on the SafeVoice website to ensure the public understands the potential impact and how to access assistance and available remedies through Navigate360.In response, NDE and the Nevada Department of Public Safety (DPS) are coordinating with state education leaders across the country for accountability and transparency from the company.Navigate360 has created a call center through the firm HaystackID, who conducted the cyber forensics analysis, to address specific questions and concerns. You can reach the call center at 833-966-1754 (toll free) from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday (excluding holidays).
