The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has arrested nine suspects in Nigeria as part of an international operation targeting cybercrime networks accused of defrauding Americans. The operation also led to the seizure of 53 electronic devices and the identification of $11 million in potentially freezable funds across multiple countries. The operation, code-named “Blackout,” is part of a wider crackdown on international fraud syndicates that target victims across borders.FBI Director Kash Patel announced the development in a post on his official X account on Sunday, saying the operation was designed to dismantle cybercriminal networks responsible for stealing billions of dollars from Americans.“Operation Blackout is taking the fight directly to the international cybercriminal networks stealing billions from Americans,” Patel said.He added that the operation in Nigeria resulted in nine arrests, the seizure of 53 electronic devices and the identification of $11 million in potentially freezable funds across multiple countries.Patel said the criminal networks operate scam centres that exploit victims, steal their life savings and target people across international borders.“These scam centres exploit innocent victims, steal life savings, and operate across international borders believing they are beyond the reach of law enforcement. They’re wrong,” he stated. The FBI director commended Nigerian law enforcement agencies and partners in London for their cooperation in the operation. He also warned cybercriminals targeting Americans from overseas that they would face the consequences of their actions.“JUSTICE WILL FIND YOU,” Patel declared. The arrests in Nigeria form part of a broader international enforcement operation that has recorded 28 arrests across Nigeria and Ghana. The wider operation also resulted in the takedown of more than 3.7 million scam-linked accounts, pages and groups, as well as the identification of over 120 trafficked workers.
