South Korean police have busted a domestic cybercrime ring for allegedly stealing millions of personal information records from businesses and demanding money.
According to South Korean media, this marks the country’s first case of police busting a large-scale hacking operation powered by generative artificial intelligence.

The group is accused of stealing roughly 8.2 million records starting around September of last year, targeting the websites of hospitals, academies and other businesses using generative AI and software that analyzes system vulnerabilities.

The group is alleged to have demanded a combined 360 million won, or about 272,000 dollars, by sending threatening emails to targeted companies, warning that public disclosure would ruin their reputations.

Police say the group’s 32-year-old leader has been referred to prosecutors.
