WASHINGTON (TNND) — The activist group behind an apparent data breach at the Department of Homeland Security appears to have targeted officials connected to the department’s immigration and border enforcement operations.Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin made that comment during a press conference days after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer fatally shot 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. (TNND)A website publishing the stolen data posted the following quote supposedly from a spokesperson for the hacking activist group Department of Peace: “On July 17th, Markwayne Mullin said he was ‘turning up the heat.’ This is what happens to ICE when you do that.”Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin made that comment during a press conference days after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer fatally shot 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. Known for publishing hacked and leaked documents, the website Distributed Denial of Secrets said the Department of Peace group gave them and another prominent “hacktivist” data identifying more than 41,000 DHS employees. They said the data was obtained by breaching a cloud-based single sign-on service used by DHS. The data is said to include names of officials, their contact information and details about their specific offices and assignments. Distributed Denial of Secrets cofounder Emma Best said the information is “replacing the regime’s anonymity with accountability,” and that it should be a “catalyst for investigations, empowering journalists, Congressional inquiries, legal challenges, community action and Freedom of Information Act requests.”In a statement, a DHS spokesperson said, “DHS is aware of a potential breach and is actively working to address the situation swiftly and effectively. We take all security threats against our employees and officers seriously and will work to ensure all are properly protected. We will update the public when more information is available.”Best said “(r)ather than an indiscriminate directory of every DHS employee,” the data they published pinpoints the “architects and drivers” of the department’s operations. This is the third data breach to impact the federal government recently: Last month, the hacking group ShinyHunters said it stole sensitive information about FBI employees and applicants, and the Pentagon revealed that a vulnerability in its file-sharing system allowed unauthorized users to access sensitive personnel data for almost nine months. About 3 million people are believed to have been impacted.
