Srinagar, Oct 31: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Sujit Kumar on Saturday identified cybercrime and the growing drug menace among the biggest challenges confronting Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that the police were prepared to tackle emerging threats while safeguarding national unity and security.Speaking to reporters at the historic Ghanta Ghar in Lal Chowk on the sidelines of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas celebrations, the IGP said the nature of challenges facing law enforcement agencies was evolving, with cybercrime and narcotics emerging as major areas of concern.“Cybercrime is one of the biggest challenges, both today and in the coming days. Along with the drug menace, there are other activities directed against our country, and Jammu and Kashmir is looking at these challenges from a new perspective,” Kumar said.He said the police would elaborate separately on the measures being undertaken to address these concerns, stressing that the occasion was dedicated to celebrating national unity and integrity. The Kashmir Police chief’s remarks came as security forces, police personnel, students and young people gathered at Lal Chowk to participate in National Unity Day celebrations marking the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.Describing Lal Chowk as a historic witness to the celebrations, Kumar said the gathering had provided an opportunity for people in Kashmir to join the nationwide observance of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas.“Today, we celebrated Ekta Diwas at historic Lal Chowk. We witnessed the live broadcast of the Ekta Diwas parade from Kevadia in Gujarat, where the Prime Minister addressed the nation,” he said. The IGP said Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, personnel from Jammu and Kashmir Police and Central Armed Police Forces, schoolchildren and Kashmiri youth participated in the programme and listened to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address.Referring to the Prime Minister’s message, Kumar said the occasion had reinforced the responsibility of citizens and security agencies to protect the country’s unity and integrity.“The Prime Minister has given us the responsibility of safeguarding the unity and integrity of the country. Whatever challenges come before the police and security forces in the coming days, we are prepared to face them,” he said.Asked specifically about the growing threat of cybercrime and the steps being taken to counter it, the IGP acknowledged the seriousness of the challenge but said a detailed discussion on the issue would be held separately. He also referred to the narcotics problem and activities threatening national security, indicating that the police were approaching these challenges with renewed focus.Kumar, however, emphasised that the immediate significance of the day lay in celebrating the country’s unity and collective commitment to national integrity.“Today is the day of national unity, the day of the country’s togetherness. We should celebrate it. I extend my greetings to everyone on National Unity Day,” he said.
