Police have detained a female bank manager and her husband who are suspected to have built an organised banking network designed to help cybercriminals move money siphoned off from unsuspecting victims. For now, police are questioning both over their alleged role in facilitating mule bank accounts and suspect them to be involved in several cybercrime cases across the country. The case has raised the disturbing possibility of an insider-assisted cyberfraud operation.

According to senior police sources, the breakthrough came while investigators were probing an investment fraud case and retraced the money trail to several bank accounts, all of which belonged to the same bank.

The common banking link prompted police to find out how these accounts were opened and who was facilitating their operation. “We found that the bank manager’s husband was luring people into opening bank accounts, and we detained the couple. We found that the husband used to provide bank account kits to people who would transfer cheated money from these mule accounts to other accounts. We have informed the bank about the scam,” an investigator said.

Investigators are also examining whether the woman misused her position or access within the bank to facilitate the opening of these accounts.
