Akamai’s Eshed Warns Traditional Controls Fall Short Against Agentic AI Risks

The rapid adoption of autonomous artificial intelligence agents is exposing gaps in traditional enterprise security controls, forcing organizations to rethink how they protect sensitive data, applications and employee activity, said Or Eshed, vice president of enterprise security product and engineering at Akamai.
Unlike conventional software, AI agents can operate across browsers, endpoints and cloud applications, often with access to sensitive corporate information and the ability to execute actions on behalf of users. Eshed said existing data loss prevention tools and network security controls struggle to account for agents that can bypass traditional restrictions, creating new risks involving data exfiltration, prompt injection and unauthorized access.
“The split and the break between network and endpoint is now becoming a liability, not an asset, because a lot of the context into AI execution now lies between them,” Eshed said. Securing agentic AI requires a unified approach that combines endpoint visibility, browser-level monitoring and network controls to track how agents access data and interact with enterprise systems.
In this audio interview with ISMG, Eshed also discussed:
How shadow AI and employee use of unauthorized agents threaten data confidentiality and compliance;
Why growing agentic internet traffic complicates traditional bot detection and application security;
How Akamai’s acquisition of LayerX expands its capabilities for securing enterprise AI usage.
Eshed is the vice president of enterprise security product and engineering at Akamai. Formerly co-Founder and CEO of LayerX, now part of Akamai, he has over a decade of experience in cybersecurity, AI and information warfare. He has filled various intelligence and research roles for cybersecurity vendors and global enterprises, was involved in arrests of hackers and threat operations takedown, and has led the takedown of the largest browser hijacker campaign in history, Fireball.
