ClassNK has granted its Innovation Endorsement for Products & Solutions to CYTUR-SBOM, a cybersecurity management platform developed by CYTUR for shipboard computer-based systems.
The platform allows shipping companies to centrally manage information about onboard hardware, software, firmware and system configurations. It also helps operators identify known cybersecurity vulnerabilities and monitor the security status of connected equipment.
The endorsement forms part of ClassNK’s programme to support innovative maritime technologies through independent technical assessment.
Platform supports onboard cybersecurity monitoring
CYTUR-SBOM is a web-based platform designed to provide a structured inventory of computer-based systems installed on vessels.
It records hardware, software and firmware information while providing visibility into the ship’s network topology.
In addition, the platform assesses individual assets against security capability checklists. The results are recorded alongside supporting evidence, allowing operators to maintain a documented overview of their systems.
CYTUR-SBOM also uses standardised product identifiers to compare registered equipment against the National Vulnerability Database maintained by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology.
Through this process, the system can identify publicly recorded cybersecurity vulnerabilities associated with onboard equipment and software.
Furthermore, the platform retains security assessment results, vulnerability identification records and document generation histories.
Access is managed through defined user roles, with separate reading and writing permissions.
The platform can also operate alongside CYTUR’s SC-P portable network scanner, which identifies computer-based systems by scanning a vessel’s onboard network.
Endorsement has defined certification scope
ClassNK granted the endorsement under its Innovation Endorsement for Products & Solutions programme, which evaluates technologies with innovative functions.
However, the classification society clarified that the endorsement does not cover Chapters 4 and 5 of Part X of its Rules for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships.
It also does not certify compliance with IACS Unified Requirements UR E26 Rev.1 and UR E27 Rev.1.
Therefore, the endorsement should not be interpreted as confirmation that the platform meets all applicable shipboard cyber resilience requirements.
The recognition highlights the platform’s cybersecurity management capabilities, particularly its approach to asset inventories, network visibility and known vulnerability identification.
The announcement did not provide details on commercial deployment, the number of vessels using the platform or any associated contract value.
