NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – Chase Bank led an educational session in Gentilly where seniors learned how to spot fraud and protect their money before holiday shopping.Diana Holmes, Chase Bank vice president and community manager, led the session.“Our senior population is the most vulnerable,” Holmes said.New Orleans resident Nita Jefferson said the session will help her when she shops.“It’ll help me a lot if I’m out there shopping or know what to look for,” Jefferson said.Jefferson said she has received unwanted calls and has her own way of handling calls she believes are scams.“When I get a phone call and I know it’s a scammer, I give him a police number to call, and that helps me a lot for them not to call me anymore,” Jefferson said.Holmes urged people to keep their devices updated and delete apps and accounts they no longer use. She said people should not share sensitive financial information with public AI tools or unapproved apps.Holmes also encouraged people to enable multifactor authentication, an extra layer of security for online accounts.“That’s why it’s important to keep your contact information correct — your phone number and your email,” Holmes said.“With scams, it’s a high likely percentage that you may or may not recover that money, but a fraud — that’s where the two-factor authentication ensures that it’s truly you,” Holmes said.Louisiana consumers reported losing more than $101 million to fraud and scams in 2025, according to the Federal Trade Commission.Chase relationship banker Christopher Gallardo Jr. said he helps customers who come in for assistance.“At least once or twice a day, I help a client. I’ve seen both times where a client has been able to get some of the funds back, but sometimes they’re unlucky,” Gallardo said.New Orleans Police Department Capt. Jennifer Dupree said people do not have to engage with scammers.“People are replying back to them. You don’t have to — you don’t have to engage. If you do get a phone call from somebody, call them back and verify. If it’s an unknown number, verify that number,” Dupree said.See a spelling or grammar error in our story? Click Here to report it.
