The developers of the Denuvo anti-piracy protection system have encountered another serious breach in their security system. Recently, the technology’s creators implemented a major security update aimed at blocking hypervisor-level bypasses that previously allowed protected projects to run. The first project to use the updated version of the protection was the space action game Star Wars Galactic Racer. Representatives of the hacker scene from the ARTIFACT group spent approximately three weeks thoroughly analyzing the changes to the program code and developing a working method to neutralize the updated verification mechanism.
After successfully breaching the Star Wars Galactic Racer security, the pace of hacking increased dramatically. The ARTIFACT group adapted their software solution and began releasing cracked versions of new games literally on the day of their official release. Furthermore, the sports simulator Football Manager 27 was completely cracked and made publicly available six days before its scheduled official release on Steam. This speed clearly demonstrates that the discovered flaw is fundamental and allows for automated bypassing of the system on current builds.
The situation calls into question the real practical value of Denuvo for computer game publishers. The main commercial argument for implementing DRM is to protect the initial sales window, when a project earns the bulk of its revenue in the first weeks after its release. The emergence of working cracks on release day, or even just a few days before, effectively negates the entire point of licensing this expensive protection. Discussions are raging in the industry about whether gaming companies will begin to abandon the technology en masse, as it places additional load on the processor and no longer protects against piracy.
