‘A tough go’: Local arena secures sponsor for new Zamboni

A local security company won the bid to sponsor the YNCU Soo Pee Wee Arena’s newest piece of equipment

The YNCU Soo Pee Wee Arena has unveiled its brand new Zamboni ice resurfacer, which is sponsored by a local security company.

Arena manager Kevin Weatherbee said as a non-profit, every attempt has to be made to find cost-effective solutions to the challenges the organization faces, such as replacing a Zamboni.

“One of the ways we keep things at an affordable cost for kids to play hockey is by sponsorships through advertising. This is the first year that we were able to have the Zamboni promoted with somebody’s name on it,” said Weatherbee.

He said the single ice sheet at the arena is almost always booked from 4 to 11 p.m, going back 40 years.

The former Zamboni was breaking down too often and, with only one sheet of ice in the arena, Weatherbee said more downtime means less time on the ice for the people who use it.

“We actually kept a good maintenance schedule on the old Zamboni and now we use it as our spare,” he said.

The newest ice resurfacer is the 2025 Zamboni 526 model, which was ordered in black.

That colour choice worked out perfectly for KC Security Services, said owner and president Daniel Laprade, because it matches the company’s colours.

He noted that KC provides security during the annual Midway at the Pee Wee held every May.

“It’s great that we can support a client, too. When that opportunity came up I wanted to do it,” said Laprade.

“It shows why you support a local company like us in the city, because we give back.”

A request for proposals was put out earlier this year in search of a new sponsor, with KC Security winning the bid.

“Without our sponsors, it would be a tough go for the kids we support,” said Weatherbee.
