About 240,000 hacking attempts targeting the court’s computer network occurred between January and August this year alone, far exceeding the total number of cases last year.
According to the data submitted by the Supreme Court’s court administration to the office of Kim Dong-ah of the Democratic Party of Korea on the 4th, 239,145 hacking attempts were detected by the court’s security information and event management (SIEM) system between January and August this year.
It is 2.4 times higher than last year’s same period (101,205 cases), and 1.7 times higher than last year’s total number of cases of 141,528. In the past, most monthly hacking attempts were below 20,000, but this year, the number soared to around 40,000 per month, including 48,263 in March and 39,915 in May.
The number of hacking attempts targeting the court decreased to 142,514 in 2021, 126,212 in 2022, 114,070 in 2023, and 98,171 in 2024 It has surged again since last year.
Between January 2021 and February 2023, 1,014GB of data was leaked due to the North Korean hacker organization’s invasion of the court’s computer network. The number of individuals included in the leaked data reached 17,998.
The court conducted a self-audit on the accident and took departmental measures to the office in charge of information protection at the National Court Administration. Three people, including the director of the Seoul High Court’s Computer Information Management Bureau, were treated unknowingly, and five were severely disciplined.
Representative Kim pointed out, “Even though hacking attempts are increasing rapidly, the court administration has been found to have rejected the entire budget for introducing security equipment as a slow administration.”
