Adams-Friendship School District investigating potential cybercrime | #cybercrime | #infosec

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – The Adams-Friendship School District is investigating a potential cybercrime attack, Superintendent Dr. Nicki Ells announced Tuesday. The school district said they were alerted by their bank in August about an unusual payment request from a third party that had been processed by the school district’s business manager. The district said they immediately alerted law enforcement, legal counsel and their insurance provider to investigate and determine the next steps. The district said it believes they may have been a victim of a cybercrime totaling $92,000 in funds. The district said they placed their business manager on administrative leave on Friday, saying it was not a determination of guilt but serves to allow the district to investigate further. “The district takes its responsibility as steward of the community’s tax money extremely seriously and will take steps to not only address this specific issue but to ensure that the district’s business operations as a whole are performed at the high level our community expects,” Dr. Ells said. The district said they are working to recover all funds, and a claim is currently being processed. The district explained it will provide updates when they are able to, as the investigation remains ongoing.
