Aflac confirms customers’ data breached in cyberattack | #cybercrime | #infosec

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) – Social security numbers and other personal information of Aflac customers may have been breached by cybercriminals, according to the company.

Aflac says they identified suspicious activity on June 12 – which initiated cyber incident response protocols and stopped the intrusion within hours.

According to officials, the cybercriminals may have accessed files containing claims information, health information, social security numbers, and other information. Aflac says the systems were not affected by ransomware.

“This attack, like many insurance companies are currently experiencing, was caused by a sophisticated cybercrime group. This was part of a cybercrime campaign against the insurance industry,” a press release about the breach read in part.

According to Aflac officials, operational systems were not affected by the breach.

Aflac customers were eligible for free credit monitoring, identity theft protection, and Medical Shield for 24 months following the attack.

The company made the information public on June 20.
