Aflac (AFL) said Friday that its network was hit by a cyberattack that affected an unknown number of customers’ personal information.
The supplemental insurance provider said on June 12, it “identified suspicious activity on our network in the United States” and “stopped the intrusion within hours.” While the company didn’t offer an estimate on the number of affected customers, it said potentially impacted data include social security numbers, health and claims information, and more.
“This attack, like many insurance companies are currently experiencing, was caused by a sophisticated cybercrime group,” Aflac said. “This was part of a cybercrime campaign against the insurance industry.” The attacker used social engineering tactics, which involve manipulating individuals rather than hacking computer systems, the company added.
Other insurance firms have experienced similar recent incidents. Erie Indemnity Company said it identified a information security incident earlier this month, as did Philadelphia Insurance Companies.
Shares of Aflac dipped in premarket trading Friday but reversed course and were up 1% in recent trading. They are near flat for 2025.
