Artificial intelligence (AI) agents attempted to hack government websites in the United States and Canada, according to a report released Wednesday by San Francisco-based nonprofit research lab Transluce.
Researchers identified “two rudimentary and failed hacking attempts,” targeting the US Department of Education’s Civil Rights Data Collection and Library and Archives Canada, a Canadian federal agency, Anadolu Agency informed.
The researchers said the unsuccessful attempts were connected to other activities in which AI agents used aggressive methods short of hacking to probe US government websites. In some cases, the agents used the sites in unintended ways and violated explicit usage policies.
According to the report, the activity involved websites operated by the White House, the Departments of War, Justice and Commerce, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Securities and Exchange Commission, as well as state agencies in California, Maryland, Illinois, Texas and New York.
“We have so far identified no instances in these datasets where agents gained access to any information that is not publicly available,” the researchers said.
