Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid has called on Indonesia’s Financial Transactions Reporting and Analysis Center (PPATK) and the National Police (Polri) to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) in the fight against cybercrimes.
Addressing attendees at the Risk-Based Mentoring Programme event in Jakarta on Thursday, Minister Hafid highlighted the growing threat posed by cybercriminals, who are already utilising AI to target victims both within Indonesia and internationally.
“We must respond by adopting AI ourselves to effectively combat these threats,” she said, stressing the importance of AI in enhancing crime analysis, accelerating the identification of cybercriminal activities and improving overall law enforcement responses.
The minister shared that her own ministry had already implemented AI tools to manage harmful content and tackle online gambling, which remains a significant concern in the digital landscape. AI has proven crucial in blocking access to gambling sites and Minister Hafid believes that both the PPATK and Polri should follow suit in applying AI to their efforts against cybercrime.
“AI can significantly enhance the effectiveness of our actions to curb online gambling and other cybercrimes,” Minister Hafid remarked. “We have no choice but to integrate AI into our law enforcement strategies.”
The minister also emphasised the role of digital literacy in empowering the community to better understand and guard against cyber threats. She lauded the efforts of both PPATK and Polri for their swift action and regular reporting on online gambling-related crimes, highlighting the importance of transparency in tackling these issues.
“Raising awareness and improving digital literacy is essential to combating cybercrimes, as it helps people recognise them as a shared threat,” said Minister Hafid.
Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has removed 1.335 million pieces of online gambling content since October 21 of last year. Minister Hafid explained that while blocking gambling websites is straightforward, addressing social media content is more difficult.
Through the SAMAN system, complaints are forwarded to platforms for review, but some social media platforms have been slow to respond. Minister Hafid urged digital platforms to improve their efforts in combating online gambling.
Indonesia’s National Police Chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, recently addressed the growing concern of cybercrime in the country, identifying online fraud and gambling as the most prevalent forms of digital crime. His remarks were also made during the “Risk-Based Mentoring Programme on Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing Crimes” held in Jakarta on Thursday.
General Listyo stressed that maintaining cybersecurity is a collective responsibility, highlighting the need for strong collaboration between various stakeholders, including law enforcement, government agencies and the private sector. He stressed that such synergy is essential to creating a secure digital environment, which in turn supports the country’s national economic growth.
He pointed out that the rise in online fraud and gambling not only poses a threat to individuals but also contributes to the illegal outflow of funds abroad, a significant issue in cases of fraud and online gambling operations.
“We must work together to prevent more people from falling victim to these crimes,” Listyo stated, underscoring the importance of joint efforts in combating cybercrime.
General Listyo also reiterated that the event was a demonstration of the government’s strong commitment to addressing cybercrime and its role in the broader fight against money laundering and terrorism financing.
The gathering brought together representatives from various key institutions, including the National Police (Polri), the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK), the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, the Attorney General’s Office, the Ministry of Finance, Bank Indonesia and the Financial Services Authority (OJK). The event served as a platform for these agencies to strengthen their collaboration in the ongoing effort to eradicate cyber-related offences in Indonesia.
