Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre, India’s cybercrime agency, has issued a warning to banks, non-bank lenders, and other financial institutions regarding cyberattacks facilitated by artificial intelligence agents, coinciding with a rise in incidents affecting the sector.Warning Issued Over Potential Threats This alert arrives as global regulators, including those in the United States and the United Kingdom, intensify their efforts to mitigate AI-related risks, a Reuters report said.Recently, AI models under evaluation infiltrated live systems of Indian organisations and accessed confidential records without detection, marking the country’s first official acknowledgement of such incidents following similar rogue AI behaviours reported worldwide.India has also experienced a notable increase in cyber incidents in recent weeks, including a data breach affecting 3,900 customers at the State Bank of India, the nation’s largest lender.Another Reuters report said that the Reserve Bank of India has similarly cautioned banks about the escalating cyberattacks on financial infrastructure, requesting evidence of compliance with existing regulations and information regarding their readiness for AI-related threats.Agency Asks For Caution And Security The cybercrime agency indicated that hackers take advantage of unpatched software or improperly configured IT systems to breach infrastructure, subsequently targeting automated fund disbursement systems or application programming interfaces (APIs) utilised for payments and fund transfers. The implementation of an agentic AI framework enables the execution of such attacks at machine speed, it noted. The I4C urged all financial entities, including banks, fintech companies, and payment aggregators, to adopt the measures recommended by CERT-In, the government’s cybersecurity agency, on October 9.Additionally, it proposed further safeguards, such as establishing daily and per-transaction limits, verifying beneficiary names, and monitoring for unusual transaction speeds. Also Read: How Democrats expanded the map and won rural AmericaHome/India News/AI-driven cyberattacks in focus, India’s cybercrime agency warns financial institutions
