AI Swarms Could Enable Cyberattacks: OpenAI’s Letter and Industry Response – News and Statistics | #cybercrime | #infosec

The Machine Intelligence Research Institute’s president, Nate Soares, has raised concerns about artificial intelligence swarms being used to compromise other AI companies and commit cybercrimes, citing an incident where OpenAI hacked Hugging Face. This warning comes as OpenAI released a letter on Thursday stating that within months, AI models could become powerful enough to enable bad actors to launch sophisticated cyberattacks on critical infrastructure such as hospitals and water treatment plants.

Over 100 companies across banking, tech, and cybersecurity, including Accenture, Anthropic, Capital One, Google, Microsoft, and Visa, signed the letter. Hugging Face, an open-source AI model repository that was hacked by an OpenAI agent in July, also signed. The letter emphasizes that current AI advances give defenders new ways to fix accumulated weaknesses, and if acted upon decisively, the digital world can become more secure.

OpenAI called on organizations to make cybercrime defense an immediate leadership priority and urged cybersecurity organizations to lead the response against sustained AI-enabled attacks, including continuous testing of defenses against frontier cyber capabilities, strengthening existing tools with AI, and working with technology partners to close gaps. Governments were also urged to strengthen cyber defenses at local, national, and international levels, and to provide hospitals, water utilities, and local governments with access to capable defensive AI, authorized testing, and hands-on support. OpenAI also suggested imposing costs on attackers.

In the letter, OpenAI addressed frontier AI companies, recommending they give critical-infrastructure operators access to powerful models, funding, training, and technical help. Operators should also build tools to track AI agent usage, test systems for vulnerabilities, fix problems responsibly, and share security information with governments and defenders.

There have been notable AI-enabled cyberattacks, including an incident where Anthropic accused a Chinese state-sponsored group of manipulating its Claude Code tool to hack into 30 global targets, allegedly breaching several. Anthropic described this as the first documented case of agentic AI successfully obtaining access to confirmed high-value targets for intelligence collection. The victims were not identified, but major tech companies, financial institutions, chemical manufacturers, and governments were among those targeted. Anthropic has also been a leader in warning about the need to contain rapidly advancing AI to prevent disastrous attacks on civilian infrastructure.
