According to a report from Yahoo Finance, Anthropic has generated significant attention in the software sector in recent months. The company’s Claude Code agent, known as Claude Cowork, has demonstrated that generative AI applications could eventually replace many enterprise software-as-a-service firms. This potential has prompted analysts to reassess the valuation of those companies’ current earnings.

In late February, the AI lab introduced Claude Cybersecurity, a tool designed to examine code for security weaknesses and propose AI-generated fixes. This development is viewed by many analysts as a challenge to existing cybersecurity companies, leading to downward pressure on their stock prices.

However, the emergence of such AI capabilities might also underscore the heightened importance of cybersecurity. In a landscape where AI agents can autonomously search for and potentially exploit software vulnerabilities, robust security measures become critical. This environment could present investment opportunities in certain cybersecurity firms.

One such company is Palo Alto Networks. The firm is actively broadening its range of services to serve as a comprehensive provider for organizational cybersecurity needs. Its most recent strategic move involved acquiring CyberArk, which brought identity security capabilities into its portfolio.

The expansion of cloud-based software and data, coupled with remote work, has increased the number of potential security vulnerabilities for enterprises. This complexity drives demand for a wide array of protective services and a trend among businesses to reduce the number of security vendors they use. Palo Alto Networks aims to be that consolidated choice through a strategy it terms platformization.

This approach involves selling multiple integrated service platforms: Strata for network security, Prisma for cloud security, and Cortex for security operations and endpoint security. The company reported having 1,550 platformization customers by the end of its second fiscal quarter. These customers generated net recurring revenue retention of 119%, suggesting existing clients are purchasing more services over time.

Palo Alto Networks’ overall revenue increased by 15% in its last reported quarter, though growth was tempered by its older hardware division. Revenue from its newer, software-based services rose 33% compared to the previous year. The stock is valued at 46 times earnings and 12 times sales estimates.
