TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WINK) — If you’re a parent, you’ve probably already had the conversation: when should your kid be allowed on social media? On Wednesday, A federal appeals court ruled in favor of a Florida law restricting social media for young users. The law would ban kids under 14 from having social media accounts. Teens who are 14 or 15 would need a parent’s permission to make an account. When Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the law back in 2024, it was the most restrictive in the country. The law targets platforms that use addictive features like infinite scrolling and personal interaction metrics to keep users online.Opponents sued claiming it violated the First Amendment, and it was blocked by a judge. Now, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals overturned the ruling. The judges acknowledge the law raises First Amendment concerns, but say it’s likely constitutional because it focuses on protecting kids from social media addiction without restricting more speech than necessary. But the legal fight isn’t over. The case is heading back to federal court, and the groups representing social media companies say they’re still exploring their options.
