SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin has filed a lawsuit against Snapchat, alleging the platform puts minors at risk and deceives parents about protections for children.
“The bottom line is suing them for putting minors at risk and for deceiving parents about their protections for kids,” Griffin said.
Lawsuit allegations
The lawsuit claims features like disappearing messages and private communication make harmful interactions harder for parents to detect.
Griffin said those design features are central to the case.
“These dangers are amplified by Snapchat’s core design features, such as disappearing messages, auto-vanishing content, that encourage impulsive sharing, and make harmful interactions harder for parents and law enforcement to detect,” Griffin said.
An Ozarks mother’s concern
For Ozarks mother Tonya Krazer, the issue is personal.
“Just that they’re out there without any guidance. Because I can see what they’re doing on a daily basis in person, but when they’re online, it’s kind of concealed,” Krazer said.
Krazer said Snapchat concerns her most because messages do not remain visible.
“Probably Snapchat, for sure. Because it’s deleted immediately, so there’s no monitoring it. So even if you had a concern about your child, you couldn’t take the phone and look through the messages and see,” Krazer said.
Snap’s response
Snap, Inc. denies wrongdoing and says it works to keep users safe. The company has 30 days to respond to the Arkansas lawsuit.
