A BAN on social media for children aged 16 and under was proposed during a public consultation on the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026 in Rakiraki.
In his submission, Tailevu native and youth leader Leone Tagicakibau warned that social media was affecting young people’s behaviour and language.
He singled out TikTok, saying social media was negatively influencing the younger generation.
“Social media is really affecting the young people of this country,” he said.
Mr Tagicakibau told the Special Committee on the Constitution (Amendment) Bill he was concerned about young people adopting vulgar language and behaviour influenced by online content.
“As a young leader of this country, looking at our young generation who have been swayed and the vulgar language that they are using, it’s really disturbing to me.”
He urged the committee to consider banning all social media platforms for children aged 16 and under.
Mr Tagicakibau said protecting children from harmful online influences was important to raising responsible young people who could contribute to the country’s future.
He said nurturing the next generation was essential to ensuring Fiji had capable leaders in the years ahead.
Australia became the first country to enforce a minimum age of 16 for accounts on major social media platforms.
